There is nothing like the allure of camping if you yearn to get away from civilization and the hustle and bustle of your everyday life. If you want to get closer to nature, then very little can compare with spending one or more nights at a campsite.

Camping is a big thrill whether you use a tent, a travel trailer, a recreational vehicle or no shelter at all. One thing to bear in mind, though, is that there are laws that cover camping, particularly in designating campsites for the protection of the environment.

For some, camping always brings a feeling of nostalgia or romanticism for simpler times and past camping trips with their fathers and uncles. It brings to mind a feeling of ‘being one with nature’ as well as that other feeling of ‘man against nature.’ After a few hours, it’s easy to see why they refer to camping as ‘roughing it.’

If you want to enjoy your camping trip, you should be prepared. There’s nothing that can ruin a camping trip faster than finding out that you have a short supply of water or no matches or flashlight.

Among the basic camping equipment are a tent, a sleeping bag, an air mattress which is placed under the sleeping bag, a flashlight or lantern, a portable stove so you can have hot meals or drinks when campfires are impractical, a hatchet, axe or saw and lots of rope. Other equipment you need can easily be picked up from home, such as pots, pans, eating utensils, dishes and glasses. Bring these items in plastic as much as possible to make the things you have to carry weigh less.

Once out in the rough, some campers prefer backpacking or hiking across land and camping at remote spots. Others prefer canoe camping, which is similar to backpacking except that travel is done via a canoe or kayak. This is a common practice especially in eastern North America. Another possibility is bicycle touring, which combines cycling with camping. Everything is carried in the bicycle and the big advantage here is that, unlike backpacking, bicycle touring lets campers travel to far greater distances.

If there’s anything else you may need while roughing it, you can also rely on the local camping supplies store for practically everything.

No need to walk a distance to share a public bathroom facility.

Camping gear has gone through significant advancement over the last 20 years. Manufacturers have been quick on putting out excellent advancements to make campers lives easier. Camping equipment suppliers have made sure that many accessories are safety approved to ensure that accidents never happen. Waterproof lanterns have replaced oil lamps, and tents are now coated with flame-retardant products. The style and design of many accessories has also greatly improved. You can find many bedding and blankets in a wide variety of colors. Also eating utensils and dishes rival that of many homes.

Just like with in today's market, you can find camping equipment in varying degrees of quality and prices from very expensive to relatively cheap. If you are new to camping, you will find that even lower end camping gear will be just fine for those week or two getaways. You will more than likely get many years out of them before they start to wear on you.

While New York City gets much of the press, it is New York state park campgrounds that have captured the hearts of many northeastern travelers. There is just something so incredibly comforting about spending time in these scenic playgrounds. Because Allegany State Park offers a variety of camping facilities, it is one of those New York state park campgrounds that is appropriate for both weekend warriors and extended stay vacationers. The park is home to some 424 campsites, 375 cabins, and three group camps. You can also rent one of the park's comfortable vacation cottages.

Another one of the most popular New York state park campgrounds is Moreau Lake State Park, which has been listed as one of the top 100 campgrounds in the U.S. This incredible camping site is known for its hardwood forests and tranquil grounds, along with its pristine beachfront. At Moreau Lake, you can enjoy hiking, boating, cross country skiing, and even ice fishing. The site also features a wooden pavilion which can accommodate as many as 120 people. It's also a user-friendly site, since vacationers can easily rent fishing gear, snowshoes, beach lounges, and beach umbrellas. Meanwhile, the famed Lake Shore Cottage boasts a refrigerator, stove, bathroom with shower, fireplace, and screened porch.

You may end up having the extra cost of a truck rental added on to your budget, and you'll have twice as many worries about damages to equipment that you don't own. Also, you can't just set up an RV wherever you please and will have to find a campground with free space to accommodate your equipment.

Finding the type of accommodation that suits you best will mean that you'll enjoy your camping trip far more than if you'd tried to box your personality into a bad fit. Outdoorsmen shun creature comforts, and those who like easy convenience find tents frustrating and unpleasant, so it's a wise idea to find out what type of personality you are and choose the accommodations that will suit you best.

Utah is a great place for camping. One of the reasons it attracted Mormon settlers was because it was full of stunning natural beauty, like nothing anyone had ever seen before.

The good news for all you campers and hikers is that all that scenery has been preserved by the park service for us to enjoy today. If you look at a map of Utah, you'll see that almost the entire south-central portion is national park. You could easily spend several weeks in Utah and always find new things to see.

Bryce Canyon

Utah has some of the greatest camping in the country, and Bryce Canyon is a choice spot. Bryce is about 250 miles south of Salt Lake City and about 7,000 feet up in the air. At Bryce, you'll find hiking trails that lead right into the canyon, and a nice, high desert climate.

It may not be New York City, but Bryce Canyon has its own Wall Street. It's a little different, though. It's one of the many canyon trails that winds around into the canyon, where you are surrounded by towering rock formations that cast shadows every which way. Bryce Canyon is a desert hiker's dream.

Because it's so high up, Bryce gets its fair share of weather extremes. In the summer it is hot, and in winter it is freezing cold. Many find that late spring or early fall are good times to go. At those times of year, you can have some warmth and sunshine for your day hikes and the cool desert night to sleep in.

Bryce Canyon has 2 campgrounds, but there are also places where you can pitch your camp out in the wilderness. Both campgrounds are RV accessible.

Zion

Zion is an amazing place because it's located in the spot where three distinct landscapes meet. It's located at the crossroads between the Mojave Desert, the Colorado Plateau and the Great Basin. This is why Zion offers sights you won't see anywhere else.

Hiking and mountain biking are the best way to see Zion. For those of you who are not into long all-day hikes, there are lots of trails that aren't too long. There are three campgrounds with varying levels of accommodation with spots for your RV and motor home. You can keep it as rugged or as comfortable as you want.

If you really want to see the best of what Zion has to offer, you have to hit the backcountry. This may mean strapping everything to your back and stretching those legs a little bit, but it will be well worth it.

At Zion, you'll see stark cliffs rising out of the canyon floor, rushing streams cutting through walls of rock, wind and water-sculpted rock formations that look like something from Mars, strikingly beautiful wildflowers growing out of bare earth... and maybe even a mountain lion! Don't worry, they're shy. If you see one, it will be for a split second before he runs off to safety.

Arches

Arches National Park is named after its most striking feature - the arches. These arches are made of all natural sandstone. Over time, the wind has carved them out of this delicate rock. For geologists, it's a goldmine of ancient fossils. For hikers and other outdoors types, it's full of spectacular scenery.

In addition to the arches that make it famous, the park is full of barren desert beauty. Giant boulders stand balanced on top of each other, like they might be ready to fall at any moment. Unearthly rocky shapes stand out in a landscape of sand, shrub and brightly colored wildflowers. Arches is a photographer's paradise, with its rock structures that subtly change shape over the course of the day as the sun hits them at different angles.

There's only one campground at Arches, the ominously named Devils Garden Campground. If you plan to go, especially during summer, you should call to make a reservation. You can also make a reservation online. There are both tent camping spots as well as those that can accommodate larger vehicles, trailers and RVs, complete with hook-ups.

You can plan a whole camping vacation around Utah alone. Besides these popular national parks, there are more out-of-the way places to camp in Utah, where you can really get away from it all.
